Medical Weight Loss
Have you tried to lose weight, but never had any real sustainable success? You’re not alone. Losing weight isn’t easy. For many people, it’s more than just eating less and moving more. It’s more than just motivation and willpower.
Medical Weight Loss focuses on understanding the underlying conditions, medications and lifestyle behaviors that may affect weight loss efforts and offers a comprehensive evidence-based treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Medical Weight Loss services are offered at select locations* as part of the UnitedHealth Group medical plan. Employees and their spouses/domestic partners who are enrolled in an eligible plan including the HSA-eligible plans, Accountable Care Plan, Doctors Plan, Kelsey-Seybold Primary Care Plan, Bind**, M Health Fairview Primary Care Plan or WellMed 1st Tier are eligible to participate.
Note: All employees, regardless of medical plan enrollment can visit a Well clinic for support to meet their weight loss goals or access weight loss resources and tools at stride.uhg.com.
How It Works
Medical Weight Loss begins by scheduling a medical assessment at an approved Medical Weight Loss location (see contact information under Get Started). Your provider will partner with you to identify possible contributing factors to weight gain and/or weight loss challenges (e.g. medications, certain conditions, etc.) that are many times overlooked.
The assessment and lab results are used to deliver a comprehensive, personalized care plan that may include a combination of medical, pharmaceutical (such as weight loss medication), nutrition, exercise and behavioral therapy components.
Medical Weight Loss was designed with the support of one of the leading experts in the field of Obesity Medicine, Louis J. Aronne, M.D., Director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Center (CWCC) which is part of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Medical Weight Loss is evidence-based treatment supported by years of medical research focused on the prevention and treatment of excess weight.
What's Covered Under Medical Weight Loss
Medical Weight Loss covers certain non-invasive, non-surgical treatments, including select weight-loss medications. In addition, subject to certain eligibility requirements, Medical Weight Loss covers certain bariatric procedures provided by our designated Focused High Performing Network. If you are already under the care of a provider who has recommended a bariatric procedure, please note that you must participate in Medical Weight Loss treatment at one of the UnitedHealth Group select locations* a minimum of six months to qualify for surgical coverage1. Medical Weight Loss treatment is currently only available at certain locations*; however, the program will continue to expand throughout 2021.
What Can I Expect

This will be followed by ongoing face-to-face or virtual appointments with a medical provider, as well as regular coaching sessions to support nutrition, exercise and lifestyle behavioral changes. 1Weight loss services provided outside of a UnitedHealth Group Medical Weight Loss treatment plan will not be accepted for the six- month pre-surgery requirement. UnitedHealth Group’s care continuum approach integrates Medical Weight Loss through the UnitedHealth Group benefit plan as a pre-requisite to bariatric surgery.
